Dhanyaka, typically known as Dhania in India is called coriander in English and is known by the latin name of coriandrum sativum. It is quite a prime spice of Indian kitchen and is often used as topping in vegetables and pulses. Dhanyaka is a word that denotes both the plant and its fruit. It helps reduce anorexia and loss of appetite. Hydra, Kustumbaru and Chatra are some of the sanskrit synonyms of Dhanyaka.


Maharshi charak has mentioned that it helps improve the taste sensation of the food. To cope up with burning sensation of the body and help in excessive thirst, it can be taken with glassful of cold infusion of Dhania’s fruit with sugar. The powder of ground fruits of Dhaniya helps in curing upset stomach. It is also helpful in curbing pitta and chronic uneasiness. Several digestive problems can be cured by the help of proper consumption of Dhania.


The fresh green leaves of Dhania are useful in giving flavor to the food and garnishing. The dry Dhania is a prime ingredient of garam masala. Dhania is helpful in purification of urinary bladder and cleaning of different body channels so as to give a healthy digestive system.
