The Concept of Medhya Rasayana in Ayurveda
Medhya Rasayana (मेध्य – रसायन)- a type of Rasayana or the combination of herbs that help in rejuvenating the brain.
According to Ayurveda, Medhya Rasayana works on three aspects of our nervous system – Intelligence (धी), Retention (धृति) and Recall (स्मृति).
Ama is an essential factor in the development of pathology. The synonym of disease i.e Amaya is said to be a condition produced by ama. The term ama possesses a unique significance in the context of pathology in Ayurveda and constitutes the most important causative factor of a great number of diseases as described in the classical texts.
In other words, Medhya Rasayana helps in bringing positive impact on intelligence, its retention and quick recall. As per Acharya Charaka, Medhya Rasayana not only acts on rejuvenating the nervous system but also helps prolong life, capable of curing several diseases, improve overall immunity, digestion, lustre of skin, and speech (voice) (Reference – Charak-Samhita – Rasayana Adhyaya).
Some of the herbs which have been identified as Medhya Rasayana are – Mandukparni or Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Mulaithi, Guruchi, Ashwagandha, Vacha, Jatamansi etc.

Medhya Rasayana as described in Charak Samhita, is very safe and well-tolerated in most individuals
