Nagarmotha (Cyperus Rotundus)

Treasures of Nature (Prakriti Ka Khazana) – Nagarmotha

Nagarmotha, known as Cyperus Rotundus in botany, is an herb that is extensively used in various Ayurvedic formulations.

In Charak Samhita, it has been indicated that this Ayurvedic herb should be used to check obesity, alleviating itching, pacifying thirst. It can also be used to remove impurities of milk for infants that are into feeding. Some Vedic literatures also say that this herb holds hypnotizing property.

Nagarmotha is bitter in taste and gives a pungent smell. After digestion, it gives a pungent aroma which helps to cure indigestion. It is very useful in increasing appetite. It is said to be quite effective in curing diarrhea as well. It has properties that help a lot in formulating remedies for lung diseases and liver. Some medicines that are used to check obesity contain Nagarmotha as its constituent. Nagarmotha, when added in parpatak and shunthi with boiling water helps in curing fever. It is also helpful to cure constipation, insomnia, erysipelas, blood disorders, epilepsy and other skin diseases. It also helps check infestation of worm.

In Jaundice, Nagarmotha is added in iron bhasma and khadira decoction and consumed. It is also used in curing ailments related to uterus and helps block sugar for patients with diabetes.
